Passion For Pokémon/How TPCi supports my passions:
I was introduced to Pokémon when I was 9 years old and it’s one of my core foundations, my bread and butter. My life is Pokémon. I breathe Pokémon. Every day I’m very thankful to work at my dream job here at Pokémon. And I can’t imagine what my life would be without Pokémon. I’ve created so many friends from it and made so many connections throughout the entire world, especially competing in many Pokémon World Championships as a child. At the 2014 Pokémon World Championships hosted in Washington D.C., I played against 9 different players representing 9 different countries. It was truly an authentic Pokémon World Championship experience because I competed against people all over the world who speak different languages. Though there might be language barriers, we all speak the language of Pokémon through cards and interactions of hand gestures and body language, In those moments, I’ve been able to utilize my upbringing of knowing American Sign Language as someone who is a child of deaf adults (CODA).

Valuable Skill/Lesson Learned at TPCi:
I have learned that I do not need title to accomplish what I want, and that change is possible. I have the freedom to try new innovative approaches and if my ideas fail, we consider it as a learning opportunity. It is through the continuous reflection of what and how we do work we grow and improve. When we implement our ideas, we evaluate the effectiveness after a while and see if together we can come up with a better idea.

How TPCi Supports My Identity:
TPCi constantly supports my curiosity in trying out different at-work activities, such as helping manage an Employee Resource Group. I joined the company as a new grad more than 10 years ago – so I grew from someone who had no idea about full-time work to who I am today, solving issues we face at our work daily.
In that 10 years, I also became a parent and my personal needs changed dramatically. That happened to coincide with changes happening at the company, and I could take part in forming an ERG to cater for fellow parents or caregivers of children in our company. This has given me a sense of reassurance as I could feel TPCi’s willingness to support its employees. It is wonderful to see different ERGs forming, to give us a chance to feedback each of our employees’ unique situations to the company, to fully support both our work and lives.

My Career Growth at TPCi:
I started at Pokémon as a Senior Producer working on one title with a team of two. Since then, my responsibilities have grown with the studio. Today, I'm pleased to be working on several titles within the Game Studio and leading nearly a dozen producers.
The progression of my responsibilities has been great, and I really value the opportunities to grow and develop as a leader. I also love working on a wide range of development needs. Producers have a hand in nearly all parts of the game development process. In a single week we can easily go from sitting in on an ideation session to planning for live Ops support to evaluating launch readiness and of course all of the art, programming and game design parts in between. The basic job requires all of us to grow, learn and figure out better ways to improve our process to become a more well-rounded team!

ERG work:
I volunteer in an ERG (The Pokémon Black Diaspora – TPBD) where I co-lead a group that promotes diversity and cultural awareness here at Pokémon, particularly around issues important to Black and African American communities. We also work with organisations and charities often; we have given donations and have partnered with a few exciting collaborations in both the United States and United Kingdom with local and global reaches.

Day in The Life:
My typical day involves a lot of communication, both with people working in TPCi, as well as candidates. I have a lot of conversations with our stakeholders to better understand the business needs, or how to make sure our interview process is equitable and fair. What I truly enjoy about my role is the fact that I am usually the first person who is interacting with the potential new hires – I have this great responsibility, but also pleasure to introduce them to TPCi, our values and culture, as well as learn about their passions!

Global Impact of Role:
As a French Senior Localisation Specialist, my role is to translate the Pokémon video games from Japanese into French to make them accessible to all French-speakers around the world (as well as French learners!). Pokémon Red was the very first video game I ever played when I was just a little kid in a remote French city, and it brought me so much joy! Thinking back, had the game not been available in French, aka the only language I could read back then, I may very well have passed on what became one of my truest passions. Knowing that my current role is key to bringing that exact same joy to new generations of players is my greatest motivation!

How TPCi Promotes Community:
As a person of color coming into an organization like TPCi, it’s been great to find and engage with our Employee Resource Groups. I love that our employees get to see how heavily TPCi invests in diversity, equity, and inclusion. In that sense, I've found a community of Latinx individuals that work with TPCi, and we've been able to connect on our culture and our backgrounds and all of that in between. I have found that to be something that's really fulfilling on top of the work that I already do. So just knowing that TPCi values that and invests in that is something that I think is a testament to what they do for the community.

What Brought Me to TPCi:
My full professional experience has been within Talent Acquisition, but I actually received a degree in Interactive Design Media in college. I really love things centered around creativity, user experience, user interface, human center design, etc. And I feel that background has helped me think about the ‘user’ more clearly in my work; I always think about what the candidate wants, experience-wise, and make sure to apply a ‘people-first’ process at all stages of the interview.
I always knew I wanted to work in a fun and creative environment within entertainment or gaming. Growing up, it never clicked in my head that an opportunity like this could be available so close to where I grew up. It’s nice to stay in my home state and be able to work for a really amazing company – one that I never realized partners with so many other businesses and separate organizations for all parts of its brand.

Why Pokémon?
In my time at TPCi I've not only learned (and still do) so much about different areas of the business, I've also been able to cultivate and exercise my personal and professional skills with different people, across different departments, and from different walks of life. We're able to share and hear achievements and learnings across different disciplines and skills, and this can only be described as literal food for the curious among us.

Why Pokémon?
It’s a great place to work! It’s fun and the brand is amazing. Our Organized Play family, internal and external, are incredible. On our team, I try to empower people to do what they think is right; to tell me when I’m wrong, to explore mistakes and bring in good ideas. I believe we’ve done a nice job of creating a space that people like to be in.

Day in The Life:
Our team works a lot on the merchandise for PokemonCenter.com, so we do all the designs for the apparel, home goods, and packaging design. I help the other designers with my experience in production and product design by relieving pain points and managing cross-functional updates between teams. I get to work with Editors, our Legal team, Merchandise Development, and business units. It’s fun being the person that helps bridge the gaps and work with so many individuals! I also know how painful it can be to not be understood on the things that are causing frustration or roadblocks for getting your job done effectively.

Passion For Pokémon/Work Beyond Core Role:
I helped out with the Pokémon Center pop up in 2019 both by volunteering for physical shifts in the store and also in the background I ran a project in collaboration with the PR team to get the London City Pikachu statue commissioned. It was fantastic for me to see our fans enjoy a huge event that I was involved in making happen. I loved seeing all the photos that fans had taken with the statue that I was a key part of making a reality. I also worked the very first shift on the grand opening which was an incredible experience!

What Makes An Employee Successful On Your Team:
The primary attribute I look for in new candidates is a natural curiosity. The desire to learn, understand, and improve the responsibilities and impact of your role, team, and company. The passion to explore the Pokémon world from our employees and our fans is unique to anything I’ve experienced at any previous company.
